About Us

We’re Karen Kühl and Don Sloth, two midlife adventurers chasing 70-degree days across the U.S. in our lovingly converted short school bus, Skuhlie, aka The Kühl Sloth Bus.

Our journey started in 2020 when the world slowed down. While some people adopted COVID puppies or had quarantine babies, we bought a bus. We needed a project, something to build, dream about, and eventually take us far from our driveway. Inspired by a minivan road trip through Alaska (where we fell in love with the freedom of life on the road, minus the lack of a bathroom), we knew we wanted something more functional and full of character. A short bus was the perfect fit.

We found our four-window beauty in Chittenango, NY, rolled up our sleeves, and slowly turned it into our tiny home on wheels. What began as a pandemic passion project has become the launchpad for a one-year journey to visit all 48 contiguous states and as many national parks as we can, chasing the sweet spot of 70 degrees and soaking up every mile.

Now in our 50s, we're embracing this chapter with purpose: to rediscover wonder, to live more with less, and to connect with people and places across the country.

What to expect from our blog:

  • Stories from the road (both beautiful and bumpy)

  • National park adventures and hidden gems

  • Life in 80 square feet

  • Travel tips for fellow wanderers, especially over 50

  • A whole lot of Skuhlie love

Thanks for riding along. We hope our journey inspires you to follow your own version of “what if.” We're keeping this page primarily to keep our friend and family updated on our adventures, if others enjoy our adventures and learn from our successes and challenges, even better.

About our logo

Our logo is more than just a fun graphic—it’s the spirit of our journey in sloth form.

When we got married, our names—Kühl and Sloth—merged in the best possible way. What started as a playful nickname for our converted bus, Skuhlie (The Kühl Sloth Bus), quickly became the foundation for our brand and our mindset: take it slow, stay curious, and enjoy the ride.

The Kühl Sloth was brought to life by the incredibly talented daughter of a dear friend, and we couldn’t love it more. Rocking a leather jacket, sunglasses, and tattoos, our sloth is cool, confident, and always ready for the next slow-moving adventure. He’s the perfect mascot for life on the road—reminding us to go at our own pace and savor every mile.

Whether we're parked beneath the redwoods or cruising down a two-lane highway, the Kühl Sloth is with us—cool, collected, and headed somewhere awesome (eventually).
