This is the week! I’ll be trading my office view in Cayuga County for the open road. After years of advocating for destinations and helping visitors discover hidden gems, it’s finally my turn to explore. I’ll officially begin a one-year “adult gap year”. Exploring all 48 contiguous states in our converted school bus, @Skuhlbus, with my husband and our ever-patient travel dog, Lucky.
Here’s where I could use your insider knowledge. Over the years, I’ve been inspired by so many of your destinations, projects, and creative ways of welcoming travelers. Now, I’d love your recommendations for what not to miss; especially in your backyard. I’m on the lookout for:
Kayak spots — calm, scenic waters with zero chance of meeting an alligator (non-negotiable).
Hikes —I love a summit hike, and heavy inclines don’t bother me, but nothing with severe drops, please! Gentle trails with great views or interpretive signage get bonus points.
Bike trails — especially those winding ones perfect for riding with Lucky now that we’ve got her carrier.
Local food finds — Local food specialties that tell a story of place, from diners to farm-to-table gems.
Pairings — your favorite hike/kayak/bike + brewery combos (this might become a series).
If your destination or favorite local business fits one of these categories, I’d love to add it to our map. Drop a note in the comments or message me directly, we’re building the adventure now and hopefully your suggestion is within our route, we can’t wait to discover your corners of the country. Thanks in advance for helping me plan this next chapter. You’ve all inspired me throughout my career, and I can’t wait to see what inspiration the road brings in return. And if our path crosses, let’s grab a local pint or paddle together.
